About the Role

Please note: this position will be based in our office in Madrid, and we can only consider applications from candidates who are already based in Madrid and who are eligible to work in Span and do not require sponsorship for a working permit.

We are looking for a Senior UI Developer to join our Investment Manager team. In this role, you will contribute to the development and modernisation of the user interface of a large, web-based investment platform used to display financial data in the browser. Your primary focus will be on building and maintaining high-quality HTML and CSS components based on UX/UI designs, supporting the team’s ongoing effort to replace legacy implementations with modern, scalable standards.

Working closely with UX designers, product management, frontend developers, and the wider engineering team, you will help ensure that user interfaces are consistent, accessible, responsive, and maintainable. You will take responsibility for the technical and visual quality of UI components from implementation through to ongoing improvement in production, while collaborating closely with others in a distributed, agile team environment.

As our Sr UI Developer, you will:

  • Develop and maintain user interface components using modern semantic HTML5 and native CSS3.
  • Implement responsive, mobile-first layouts that work consistently across devices and screen sizes.
  • Build scalable and maintainable UI structures using CSS Grid, Flexbox, container queries, and CSS custom properties. We employ our own CSS framework, using ITCSS & BEM methodologies.
  • Contribute to the ongoing modernisation of the UI codebase by replacing legacy HTML and CSS with modern standards.
  • Implement UI components based on UX/UI designs, ensuring accurate layout, typography, spacing, and interaction states across the user interface.
  • Maintain and evolve design systems, UI guidelines, and reusable component libraries.
  • Perform visual quality assurance and help identify and resolve UI-specific issues.
  • Provide technical coaching and perform code reviews in the UI/CSS environment
  • Collaborate closely with UX designers, product managers, and frontend developers during design and implementation.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and continuous improvement of UI and front-end practices.
  • Work within the agile methodology, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and delivery through Jira-managed backlogs

Who you are

You have experience with:

  • HTML5 development, with a strong focus on semantic, accessible markup.
  • Modern CSS, including CSS Grid, Flexbox, container queries, and CSS custom properties; you keep apprised of Baseline developments as well as having deep knowledge of how to manage incremental improvements.
  • Building responsive, mobile-first user interfaces across devices and screen sizes.
  • Structuring and maintaining scalable CSS architectures, e.g. ITCSS or similar methodologies.
  • Working with design systems, UI guidelines, and component libraries.
  • Ensuring accessibility best practices, including color, contrast, focus management, and readability.
  • Collaborating closely with UX/UI designers and reviewing UI implementations together.
  • Performing code reviews and contributing to shared UI standards and best practices.
  • Debugging and resolving UI-specific issues within a complex, long-lived codebase.
  • Working effectively in agile development environments.

You feel confident working in a role that:

  • Focuses primarily on UI development rather than general frontend or backend work.
  • Involves maintaining and modernizing legacy HTML and CSS alongside new development.
  • Requires collaboration across a distributed, multi-location team.
  • Encourages learning, experimentation, and adoption of new technologies over time.
